My town really could do with a makeover. It is said that the condition of the streets reflect the culture of its inhabitants. Society's reflection can be seen in how we treat our buildings and streets. Most cities find it difficult to keep the streets clean. The main reason is the irresponsibility of its citizens. Each person must be aware of his responsibility to keep his streets neat and tidy. He also has a duty to prevent others from dirtying it. Most of us look the other way if we happen to see somebody littering the street. We are afraid to interfere. We have lost our ability to scold others for doing something wrong. We think that it is the responsibility of the civic authorities to keep the streets clean. It is not right.
Now I don't let off the council either! When I look at the old buildings in my town, many are badly in need of stone restoration and general renovation work. I've done similar work in the past - secured in my fall arrest lanyards, working at height - and it really makes a difference when you can clean up old buildings. It saddens me to think my council are wasting our money on frivilous nonsense much of the time when old buildings badly need some repair work to be carried out, not least our town hall! |

I would really like to update my bathroom to something ultra-modern and bring it in to the 21st century, including adding new fasteners for my shower curtains. The rest of the house has already made the transformation - complete with its twig lights and other soft furnishings - but somehow the bathroom got left behind. Featuring a urinal, a mismatched red toilet that is too small and a counter top sporting chipped, red and blue tiles, this area is in drastic need of a makeover. I envision removing the urinal and installing a black bidet along side a new stylish toilet of the same color. The counter top and sink could be replaced with a futuristic looking sink with either a marble or granite counter top. I would also like to switch the old bathtub to a modern shower that would showcase the latest in shower head technology. My last wishes for the bathroom are that the existing mirror and lighting is replaced by something befitting this new and modern oasis and that the floors reflect the opulence of the counter top. A simulated stone or marble tile would certainly fit the bill and tie everything together nicely. Now to find some help to do this - my neighbour is a DIY nut - he owns diamond blades and all sorts of tools, so I'll start with him and see if he wants to help out. |

I consider myself a practical person - I've done all kinds of practical work posts in the past - from electric motor repairs to roof laying, and also love to engage in DIY around the home. As to what I would love to change to my home? The first would be the overall look. Instead of keeping traditional pieces of art, I would go for the minimalistic ones. I would paint my house stark white and the interiors would be either transparent, black or purple. My bedroom would have a purple tinge to it. I would keep a purple rug matching with the purple curtains in addition to the white bed sheets with purple cushions on it. The sitting area would have a huge glass bay window facing the green lawns outside. It would be accessorized with a gigantic yet comfortable sofa and lots of cushions on it. This is the place where I can sip my morning cup of coffee and do the newspaper crossword while being at ease. The stairs going to the upper floor would be white as well. The flooring would be all done with spectacular white marble. Being a fan of the open kitchen, I would love to have one in my home. I would decorate it with purple organza flowers and dark purple granite slabs. The crockery would be stark white and minimalistic. These are the things that I would love to change about my house provided the fact that I had the money and time to do so. |

One of the most relaxing things I can think of is gardening. I like to work in my garden after a long hard day working for the roofing contractors down the road. It may be a lot of work but it's all worth it in the end. A garden can be quite beautiful and seeing your hard work pay off is a great feeling. I have gardens all around my house plus potted plants on my patio. I also put a couple lilac trees in the backyard. On the sides of the house, I have different colored rose bushes. Then in the front, I have an assortment of different flowers. My mom likes to stick with certain colors in her garden, but I just mix them all up in mine. Most of them, I don't even know what type they are. I just pick them based on how good the coloring is and how pretty I think they are. I know some of them are pansies and impatiens. In the backyard, I mainly grow tomatoes. I usually can those and make my own spaghetti sauce and stuff like that. Most of the time, the worst things I find in my garden are worms. One time I found a snake in there. I'm very afraid of snakes and almost had a heart attack. I'm just glad I haven't seen any more since that one time!

My last job was at an assisted living facility taking care of dementia patients. There were a lot of health hazards on this particular job, surprisingly. There were maintenance duties, so one had to be wary of slipping when mopping the floor. One also had to be careful handling the different cleaning chemicals so that skin was not burned and harmful chemicals were not inhaled, and to be honest, we didn't have the appropriate ppe workwear. We were responsible for client care also, which meant being careful as the worker on behalf of the worker and the client. We had to be extra diligent about slipping during showers and be wary of visitors' shoes tracking in water during the winter and rainy seasons. We had to practice universal precautions when caring for clients, because some of them had communicable diseases. We had gloves to wear during personal care and meal times, and we had face masks and paper suits to wear in case their was a body fluid leak anywhere, especially blood. Soiled materials got taken to a particular furnace room for disposal. We had a sharps container for certain medical waste. |

If I could I would change quite a few things in my house. I would start with the kitchen, I would love to have a more modern style of kitchen. Loving velcro products, I'd swap out the current fasteners used in the kitchen for velcro ones. I intend to create a warm environment with neutral colors and themes. A island counter top with built in dishwasher would be nice. I would paint the walls a calm inviting color with a border that accented the whole room. The next room I would tackle would have to be the common room. Starting with new furniture and perhaps opening up a wall to make it bigger. A bigger television would also be in these plans. Last but not least a new bedroom would seal the deal. I would love to have one of those beds that have the fancy poles on the headboard and foot-board. Mostly to improve my house I would need some paint and some new furniture. After all home is the one place that you should be comfortable and love. |

Cleaning - most people hate it, and yet the odd - and some say very odd - person relishes a good clean up. Count me in the latter group. I've cleaned beaches, underground oil tanks, roads, houses, gardens, even shopping centres. I am proud of my work history, and think I've contributed enormously to the well-being of every citizen in my local borough. After all, a clean environment puts us in a better frame of mind than one that's filthy. While I think it's everyone's civic duty to clean up after themselves, I know in reality that doesn't happen, and so I see my work as something necessary. We'll always need cleaners and the world would be a much more depressing place without them. I always recommend cleaning as an occupation to the young people since it gives me an enormous feeling of satisfaction at the end of each day. |
